Getting started

  1. Download Lift from the Mac App Store and open it.
  2. Follow the short introduction and allow Screen Recording when macOS asks.
  3. Press ⇧ ⌘ 2, drag over any text on your screen, and paste it anywhere with ⌘ V.

Troubleshooting

Lift says it needs Screen Recording access

Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording (Screen Recording on macOS Sonoma) and turn on Lift. Then relaunch Lift — macOS applies the change only after the app reopens, and may offer to Quit & Reopen it for you.

macOS asks again whether Lift may access the screen

Recent versions of macOS periodically ask you to confirm screen access for apps that capture the screen. Choose Allow to keep using Lift. This is a macOS prompt; Lift’s behavior doesn’t change.

The shortcut doesn’t do anything

Another app may be using the same shortcut. Open Lift and record a different one — any combination with ⌘ or ⌃, or a function key, works. You can always start a capture from Lift’s menu bar icon, too.

Some text wasn’t recognized correctly

  • Select a slightly larger area around the text.
  • Press ⇥ while selecting to try another mode, such as Single Line or Code.
  • Very small or faint text reads better when you zoom in first.
  • Check your Preferred Languages in Lift’s Settings if you often read more than one language.

Only one line was copied

The free version of Lift copies one line per capture, in every language and without limits. Lift Pro copies the whole selection, however long. It’s a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

Restoring Lift Pro on another Mac

Sign in to the Mac App Store with the same Apple Account, open Lift, choose Get More From Lift and click Restore Purchase.

Uninstalling Lift

Quit Lift from its menu bar icon, then drag Lift from your Applications folder to the Trash. You can also remove it from the Screen Recording list in System Settings.

Privacy

Lift recognizes text entirely on your Mac and doesn’t collect any data. Read the Privacy Policy.

When you write to us

It helps to include your macOS version, your Lift version (Lift › About Lift), and a short description of what you were trying to capture. Please don’t send screenshots that contain private information.
